Ai Weiwei : "Remembering" (2009)

30 July 2015

Today I have seen the movie "Ai Weiwei Never Sorry" which was about the artist named Ai Weiwei, he is a famous Chinese artist and also political activist. His work represents of social justice and political in China.

"Remembering" (2009)

"Remembering" (2009) is the Ai Weiwei's work that commemorate the victims who were buried underneath of collapsed school in the Sichuan earthquake. Because of negligence in the building of schools, there were over 4,000 children perished that Ai Weiwei was able to research the name and published on his blog. In this work, he used 9,000 backpacks and five colour; red, yellow, blue, green, and white to create the Chinese sentence from the mother's victim on facade which was " She lived happily for seven years in this world". I think he want to remind people to recall the children and especially, provoke people to think about the substandard building that there was some corruption behind.

"Remembering" (2009)

This work reminds me about some negligent buildings in my country such as flat and office building that there are business and government corruption behind, the owner want to make only a profit without considering about the safety of an occupant or even a laborer. Last year there were the flat was collapsed that made a laborer died while they were working. Whereas, there was on one paid attention to them just read from news and forgot about it after that. I think maybe because they are a laborer that made no one treated as important situation which is discrimination problems and especially social inequality in my country. I think the way that Ai Weiwei presented that really powerful and make people to realize about association of life and corruption problems.

"The map of my memory" by Apirata Kuantana

Apirata Kuantana is the student from Foundation course at UCA which progress to BA Illustration. This exhibition is the final project before she will finish this course in this month. She chose to do the project about her hometown memory which is the province in North-East Thailand called 'Nan'. Moreover, she aim to attract an audience to fascinate in Northern Thai culture and influence to visit there.

"The map of my memory" Apirata Kuantana (2015)

In this work, she used Polaroid frame to express her illustration of childhood in Nan because she thought Polaroid is a photo that subtle and blurry like her childhood memories in hometown. In the vivid pictures, she painted about places that she has been there and used to such as Buddhist temple, restaurant, and market. Furthermore, there is the picture puzzle that look like a man and a woman, which she said that is the tradition panting from a temple's wall. Besides, she used the another way to express her memories by drawing her family and friends in black and white colours. The difference things between vivid colour pictures and black and white pictures except colours are details and techniques because she painted only places in colour pictures and more details, but in black and white pictures, she drew a portrait without particulars. I think she wants to make an audience focuses on the places according to her aim that she want to show the beautiful places in her hometown and she also want to express her memories which include her friends and family. Furthermore, in the white frames, we can see the piece of paper which look like burn paper inside the frame. If we look at the each frame, we couldn't predict what is the meaning or appearance but if we step backward and see the holistic, we could see that is look like a map. She said that holistic of the white frames is the shape of Nan's map.

Sketch book of "The map of my memory" Apirata Kuantana (2015)

I think her work is successful because when I saw her work I want to go to Nan, even I'm also Thai people, I never go there. I can see the culture and precious memories in her work that made me miss my hometown so much which is capital city named Bangkok. Even Nan and Bangkok are in the same country but we have quite different atmosphere that she can express the attractive angle of Nan about culture and living. Finally, if I have a chance to go back to my country, I'll visit Nan by following her memories pictures!!

“ Finding Ways to Lose Yourself ” : Peter Kuper

15 July 2015

“ Finding Ways to Lose Yourself ”

Today I have attended the Lecture about “ Finding Ways to Lose Yourself ” which is how the journey, being lost and filed trip crucial for discover the unexpected idea and inspiration to develop my creative mind. Furthermore, there were some example the artist who succeed from their journey experience. Peter Kuper is the artist that I chose to mention about because I was impressed by his unique illustration style and also his journey!

Peter Kuper is an famous American cartoonist, illustrator as well as political and social observation. His illustration works has published regularly in magazine which are Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, and MAD, where he illustrates SPY vs. SPY every month.  Besides, he has written and illuminated about his own journey experience and political such as Comics Trips, Diario de Oaxaca and World War 3 illustrated.

Fig. 1. Peter Kuper's comics trips; A Journal of Travels through Africa and Southeast Asia (1992)

He has traveled wildly through Latin America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia, which he gathered his experience to illustrate the book named Comics Trips: A Journal of Travels Through Africa and Southeast Asia. Moreover, he and his family moved to the Mexico state of Oaxaca for 2 years, whereas, in that time he was in the epicenter of Mexico’s biggest political struggle in recent years. Thus he started drawing and writing what he was seeing around him which became the book named Diario de Oaxaca (see fig.1)

He gained lots of thing from exploration while his journey that he could apply for create his own extraordinary book. For example, he presented the one part distinct vision of Oaxacan life from the fight between strikers and government troops by using the vivid colour to paint graphic portrayals. In my opinion, Journey lead people to explore new situation and different aspect from another places.

Figure 2, "Building" (2013)

Besides the artwork about the journey, He also illustrates about the world current situation such as crime, global warming, discrimination, education and military.

In the work named "Building" (see fig.2), he shown the crime in the capital city that the  four man represent as the businessman who can control the building as well as everything in the town. The building on the businessman hands could move easily as they want because they have a power to do, which is expressed by using the man are bigger than the building and the way that those eyes are looking at.

In my opinion, I think this picture represent the corruption behind business that  realize me to the similar situation in my country. Moreover, I think this picture can make the audience aware of the truth that the corruption and crime are concealed from influential person.

So..Do you want to lose yourself and start the new unforgettable journey?? Don’t forget to bring your sketchbook and colour pen, perhaps you’ll get the new excited story for you own book!!!

Preserving What is Valued : Art Review

14 July 2015

"Preserving What is Valued" is the exhibition that display in Pitt Rivers Museum. This exhibition show the way an ancient people fixed the broken craftsmanship such as ceramics, gourd bowl, and canoe prow ornament. In broken ceramics, the owner used lacquer and gold to repair these works which is Kintsugi method. Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing the broken pottery by using lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver or platinum between the fracture.

This plate decorated by using the flower form in the middle of the plate and using brown colour and some blue and green colour to paint on the flower. There are the crack around the edge of the plate and large noticeable crack on the right side, which the owner used the lacquer and gold to fix the broken plate. I chose this piece because it definitely relate with my work which is ceramic, I often broke my ceramic work whether it be in processing or moving. Thus, this method is extremely useful to repair my work and I'll not using a glue anymore!!

Art School Confidential (2006) Review

9 JULY 2015

Art School Confidential (2006) Review

Jerome is the boy who want to be the great artist in 20th century. He enrolls in the art collage to pursue his dream but It is not like he thought… In the real life in collage, he attempt to create outstanding work but he lose himself as well as he lose his own style because he want to win Jimmy’s painting, whose is Jerome’s classmate. At last, he can be the artist that he want in the odd way which is like a irony.

In my opinion, I think it’s good to improve the skill and find the new different techniques to create the great work but do not forget to be yourselves and your style. Actually, I missed the crucial part that made me a bit confuse in the end... such a shame. Anywhere, I think satisfaction and proudness on your work is extremely important, even other people do not like your work or give some bad feedback to you, keep those word and use it to improve yourselves because the way to be a great artist doesn’t have the short cut.

So, Do you want to be a great artist?  me... absolutely !!!

Desmond Morri Exhibition

8 JULY 2015

Desmond Morris Exhibition at O3 Gallery

This exhibition is all about Desmond Morris’s artwork which are painting and mixed media. This artwork named “ The Gladiator” (2013) which made by Desmond Morris, the techniques was mixed media on paper. He use the component parts of humans and animals body to create his work, moreover, the colours that he used was colourful which is attractive to see it. His work

In this piece, he combined between the shape of bones and perhaps an organ to create the character which look like a human. Personally, I think he tries to express the gladiator life as the work’s name that gladiator might be fight till the body gone, just a bones are left.

In my opinion, I like this artwork because I impressed by the way he dismantling and dismembering the human form and then use these pieces to create the new character, and I appreciate the colours and techniques he used to decorate his work.

If I have chance, I’ll go to visit this exhibition because this exhibition doesn’t belong to the three museums that we’ll go on this Friday. If you interest in this exhibition you can check it out on the website here

No. 1 - Project 1

5 JULY 2015

First day that I came to Farnham was really exited. Before I had come, I wondered about how the accommodation look like, how about my housemate, and definitely the lesson in 10 week! After I met my housemate, they are so lovely and kind that I really like them :)

When the first class started, I really nervous because this is my first time to study aboard and I concerned about my language. Even I can understand English almost but I can't speak well. The first day was about welcoming and ice breaker with new friends.

Now,I have been here for 2 weeks for UCAPSED course. Moreover I have been doing project 1 which is mapping cultural heritage. Me and other student had chance to go to the V&A museum that we had to choose 3 exhibitions for visiting and reflection the experience.

I enjoy to do the project 1 but now I have one day left before the deadline!!
